Qatar: Beyond Your Imagination

«Life is a collection of experiences. Let me be your guide.»

Marriott International Luxury Collection Motto

The most unforgettable adventures often begin with little warning, and it’s those last-minute escapes that tend to leave the strongest imprint.

My trip to Qatar came together just three days before departure—and as a traveller seasoned with spice from various corners of the globe, I couldn’t resist the thrill of the unexpected. With Qatar’s rich culture and sun-soaked climate in mind, I carefully plotted each look—from effortlessly chic daywear to dazzling outfits fit for glamorous nights. My suitcase, bursting at the seams with 30 kg of carefully chosen style, included a standout leopard-print Kenzo dress that all but roared with promise. Trading the cold, grey skies of November in Paris for the golden warmth of Doha, I touched down in a city where opulence dances with tradition, and every moment felt like the start of something extraordinary.

Qatar: A Land of Extravagance and Timeless Tradition

Before this trip, all I really knew about Qatar was that it topped the charts as the world’s richest country per capita. A small but mighty desert peninsula, I adored this Middle Eastern gem for its blazing summers, with temperatures soaring up to a scorching 55°C. I also was aware that it’s ruled by an absolute monarchy, where power stays within the royal family—keeping centuries of tradition alive.

My only real taste of Qatar had come from flying with Qatar Airways, where the elegant Arabian oryx—its national symbol—graces the tails of their aircraft, offering a quiet hint of the pride and heritage woven into the nation’s identity.

But nothing could have prepared me for what came next. Thanks to an exclusive three-day tour with Marriott International, I got a front-row seat to a world where luxury knows no bounds, culture runs deep, and hospitality feels like a warm embrace. What started as a whirlwind promise of glamour quickly turned into a dazzling reality. I visited—and stayed in—five stunning Marriott properties, each one offering its own slice of magic.

Marriott’s Luxury Collection is one of the most exclusive in the world. And incredibly, five of the hotels from the collection are right in Doha: Al Messila Resort & Spa, JW Marriott Marquis City Center, The St. Regis Doha, W Doha, and The Ritz-Carlton Doha. These stunning properties might look like they’re competing for the spotlight, but in my view each one offers something entirely its own. From bold and modern to timeless and serene, they’re not rivals—they’re five dazzling jewels, each adding its own sparkle to Marriott’s crown. Here’s the best of what each had to offer.

1

Al Messila Resort & Spa Doha: A Sanctuary of Serenity

My adventure began at the brand-new Al Messila Resort, where I arrived at 2 a.m. The maître d’ whisked me past two Arab princes checking in and straight to my villa—which, frankly, felt more like a miniature palace.

Inside, the luxury was effortless, rather than overwhelming—elegance whispered at every turn. It was like stepping into a Hollywood movie, where I felt like Grace Kelly, but with an Arabian sheikh instead of the Prince of Monaco.

Though exhausted, I couldn’t resist exploring: handwritten note from the General Manager, fresh orchids on the bed, stunning bathroom. After sampling Middle Eastern sweets and fresh juices in the middle of the night, I slipped outside to my private courtyard and pool, glowing softly in the night. A few peaceful laps under the stars, and I finally retired to bed.

In the morning, I opened the curtains and realised Al Messila is perfect for those seeking privacy and a taste of Eastern luxury. Every villa comes with a private pool and a state-of-the-art kitchen, ideal for culinary exploration. And when you're done cooking, the spa is waiting to unwind you.

Oh, did I say the spa? Irresistible. Afterward, you’ll crave red, but beet juice, not wine!

Al Messila: The Middle East’s Best-Kept Secret for Women Who Know

Picture this: a wellness sanctuary the size of the National Museum of Qatar—15,000 square metres of pure, unadulterated indulgence. Welcome to Al Messila, Doha’s most exclusive spa retreat, where the only thing more impressive than the amenities is the clientele.

From reflexology to two-hour massages, sunrise yoga to bespoke nutrition workshops, this is a five-star reset button. And the pièce de résistance? It’s ladies only. No gentlemen, no phones —just uninterrupted me-time.

You’ll begin with a cocooning ritual (think futuristic mattress that syncs with your heartbeat), followed by a massage that’s less ‘spa day’ and more spiritual awakening. Afterwards, retire to the in-house library, where titles range from Nietzsche to Fifty Shades, many with a feminist twist.

Al Messila isn’t just a spa. It’s a society of its own—for women who know that true luxury lies in being entirely, blissfully offline.

Highlights of the Al Messila Experience:

  • 152 lavishly appointed rooms and 30 private villas with secluded gardens and pools
  • A gastronomic journey led by a Michelin-starred chef across eight distinguished restaurants
  • A world-renowned, women-only wellness retreat spanning an impressive 15,000 sqm
  • Thoughtfully designed family-friendly amenities, including an exclusive children’s club
  • Al Messila is famous for its gardens filled with mimosas and acacias—a true oasis in the heart of the desert

3

St. Regis Doha: Timeless Elegance and Noble Traditions

My next stop on the map of Doha was the St. Regis Hotel, a monument to both opulence and history. Founded by John Jacob IV Astor in 1904 in New York, it stands as one of the wealthiest hotels in the world in terms of both heritage and legacy. Astor’s mother, Caroline Schermerhorn Astor, was a renowned socialite famous for her late mornings and an indulgent routine that began with afternoon tea (or cup of champagne, darling?), and culminating in a gala dinner. It was Caroline who invented the concept of the VIP—at her exclusive dinners, only few guests were gently tapped on the shoulder to be invited to the midnight party. Furthermore, it was here that the iconic Bloody Mary cocktail was born. That's why today, each St. Regis property boasts its own unique version of this classic drink.

While I resisted the temptation to indulge in the cocktail amidst the heat and the collective air of sobriety, I left with a gift: a book of Bloody Mary recipes from St. Regis, complete with a signature shaker and a miniature bottle of vodka, subtly infused with red chili pepper. A reminder that, in the chilly embrace of Paris, their moment will surely arrive.

By the way, it’s worth noting that John Jacob Astor, the founder of St. Regis, met his untimely fate aboard the Titanic.

But back to today: on Fridays, the St. Regis hosts the most coveted lunches in Doha, where the international elite—and the city's expatriate crowd—gather for what has become an unmissable social event. These luxurious lunches evolve into afternoon tea ceremonies, echoing the famed gatherings of New York’s elite at Caroline Astor’s home in the early 20th century. As the evening progresses, the celebration flows into the nightclub, where the night continues in quintessential St. Regis style.

Distinguished Offerings:

  • 336 elegantly curated rooms and suites, complete with personalised butler service
  • Twelve world-class dining venues, including Gordon Ramsay’s Mediterranean masterpiece
  • Doha’s most expansive ballroom and a spa of exceptional repute
  • An exclusive private beach and an Olympic-sized swimming pool
  • The hotel, its restaurants, and spa have received numerous awards

4

W Hotel Doha: The Pulse of Modern Luxury

However, for the evening’s festivities, I made my way to another hotel – the W Hotel, a exemplary embodiment of modern urban chic.

The W is the perfect haven for the fashion-forward, the eternally youthful, those who thrive on the pulse of cocktails, great music, and an ever-vibrant nightlife. With interiors that are as sleek as they are eclectic, the hotel’s playful touches include a bed placed squarely in the center of the room, surrounded by suspended pendants that stretch from floor to ceiling. The hotel’s unofficial motto—"detox – retox – repeat"—captures the essence of its hedonistic charm.

At the W, I was welcomed by mermaids, an electrifying DJ whose mixes had everyone—from the first beat—swept up into a frenzy of dancing, a sultry saxophonist, a mesmerising violinist who effortlessly teamed up with the DJ, and a drummer whose rhythms conjured the sensation of an entire orchestra.

Waiters glided through the crowd, serving delectable (and surprisingly healthy!) fruit cocktails and spirits. In a moment of spontaneous restraint, I found myself turning down the latter, though I couldn't resist the allure of the former.

A Glimpse into the Experience:

  • 240 avant-garde rooms and 49 distinctive suites, each with a unique aesthetic
  • Michelin-starred culinary excellence by Jean-Georges Vongerichten
  • A nightlife scene that plays host to world-renowned DJs (Black Coffee, W&W, Bob Sinclar, Cosmic Gate)
  • A rooftop oasis offering mesmerising sunset views over the city
  • Art gallery on the 29th floor supporting local artists, hosting major cultural events like The New York Times Art for Tomorrow conference

5

The Ritz-Carlton Doha: Blend of Parisian and Qatari Sophistication

The final jewel in this luxurious five-star crown is The Ritz-Carlton, where the art of blending private indulgence with public flair is taken to new heights.

Nestled by the sea, expansive and open, The Ritz-Carlton perfectly embodies Qatar’s spirit—where cutting-edge technology meets timeless tradition. While all Marriott Luxury Collection properties exemplify modern luxury, it was only here that I truly felt at home.

Why?

It’s hard not to be enchanted by The Ritz, especially with its Parisian sibling on Place Vendôme, a place I’d happily take up residence in—just like Coco Chanel. More than just a hotel, it’s a lifestyle, a mood. The best of everything, with a Qatari twist, greeted me in Doha.

Perhaps it was the mesmerising sea view from the balcony, or the VIP lounge on the 23rd floor, where the days slipped by effortlessly—working, socialising, and savouring the buffet before exclusive evening events? Or the stunning modern art beside the bed, so captivating I couldn’t resist snapping a photo? Even the bathroom exuded luxury, tempting me to leave the Asprey launch early just to enjoy a peaceful evening there.

The rooms? Parisian perfection!

I didn’t get to try the pool, but judging from the view on the 18th floor, it’s definitely worth a visit for its size, shape, and wide range of activities.

In the 1930s, Asprey pioneered the cocktail shaker. Now, in honour of Art Deco’s revival, they’ve designed an exquisite silver drinks trolley for The Ritz-Carlton Doha. This chic piece—complete with hand-engraved glassware and exclusive accessories—pays tribute to the golden age of stylish indulgence. Don’t miss the bespoke cocktails crafted in honour of the partnership between these iconic brands.

Signature Elements:

  • 374 impeccably designed rooms and suites boasting sweeping views of the Arabian Gulf
  • An exclusive VIP lounge offering bespoke services
  • A secluded beach and an array of leisure facilities
  • Five distinctive dining establishments, including an elegant French brasserie and a renowned steakhouse
  • View of the Persian Gulf, The Pearl-Qatar (an artificial island akin to Dubai's Palm Jumeirah), and Lusail

Qatar: A Tapestry of Heritage and Modernity

It is noteworthy that Qatar, long under British protection, stands as one of the most "open" communities in the Middle East. Although alcohol consumption is restricted, Qatari citizens are prohibited from drinking, and public intoxication is frowned upon, hotels are still categorised as "dry" or "not dry." But it's worth noting that Qatar's spa offerings are world-class, offering a refreshing alternative to alcohol.

Beyond hotel luxury, Qatar offers desert safaris, camel races, and visits to museums like the National Museum of Qatar, designed by Jean Nouvel. The museum's interactive exhibits trace the country's history from the "Big Bang" to the present. For a taste of local culture, the Souq Waqif market is a vibrant mix of colours, sounds, and spices. Welcome and enjoy!
